In with the Old... Out with the New
Rooms

Updating a Traditional Home

It is GLOOMY out here in Chicago today.  The rain is not letting up so I need to put together some type of cheerful inspiration board.  I often see a lot of homes that are filled with beautiful quality furniture but they look a little, well…gloomy.  Chippendale chairs, mahogany furniture, brass tables are usually the key components.   But these rooms are so easy to update especially with some new fabrics and a bright color.  So today I put together a little inspo board focusing on the vibrant and cheerful color, green.

First I’d start out with the walls and paint them Farrow and Ball’s, Ball Green.  Not the green you might expect initially but it will keep the room from appearing to apple-ish.  Because a full on green wall is a little too much for me, I’d break it up with a chair rail and keep the bottom Benjamin Moore’s, White Dove.  I’d embrace all that dark furniture and brighten each piece with a fun print fabric but then soften it back down with some pink pillows and accents.  Adding skirts to tables or other pieces of furniture is a simple way to cover the dark and lighten up the mood.   It would also be easy to brighten up a dark china cabinet with some beautiful green vintage Majolica and Ironware. Finally small touches like classic urn lamps in a soft hue and botanical prints are classics that are in line with the traditional furniture.  Of course, if you can get your hands on some green ginger jars it would be the finishing touch!  Until Monday ~GG
