Then vs. Now: Mid-Century Modern Lighting

One of most interesting things about antique and vintage pieces is seeing them become popular again and not looking any different than their old self.  Light fixtures are a perfect example of this.  Of course, there are benefits to buying new lighting.  Who wants to deal with sketchy wires or wondering if it is UL Listed! Typically, I will always try my best to buy original.  Though not in the case of trying to acquire an authentic Stilnovo light fixture.

Stilnovo is an Italian lighting manufacture located in Verona, Italy.  Their fixtures are of amazing craftsmanship and the price tag for one confirms it!  Stilnovo fixtures were quite popular in the 1950s-1960s and have been replicated time and time again.  Most recently they are going through another round of replication with the new craze of mid-century modern design. In addition, Stilnovo has re-released their iconic lighting for purchase.  If you are interested in an original, I’ve found that sites like 1stdibs and Chairish have a good assortment.

Below are some prime examples of Stilnovo originals and today’s replicas.  Crazy isn’t it!?  I sure love those Sputniks!  What would you rather purchase, an original or a knock-off?  Often, our pocket books answer that question before we could even decide!  Until tomorrow ~GG
